Many of us are fortunate to live in peaceful countries. But even in peacetime, nations continue to invest in military training, because the threat of war is always a possibility.

Micah’s audience was probably facing threats from the Assyrian army (Micah 5:5). The prophet envisions a future invasion of Judah, where the enemy will advance only as far as the “fortresses” that are built to resist invading armies. This suggests the invaders will not make it through to Jerusalem. In response, God’s people will raise up “seven shepherds” and “eight commanders”. These numbers symbolise completeness and abundance, indicating a strong and sufficient leadership under the promised shepherd-king, who will lead them to victory.

They will “rule” or “shepherd” (v. 6, ESV) Assyria “with the sword”, meaning that they will assert control by force. The “land of Nimrod” is another way of referring to Babylon and/or Assyria, since Nimrod was a mighty warrior who established Babel and cities in Assyria (Genesis 10:8–12). His name evokes images of strength and defiance—qualities that foreshadow the threats these nations would pose to God’s people. Yet, under the leadership of the promised Davidic ruler, any enemy who crosses the border will be decisively defeated.

In Micah’s time, Babylon was under Assyrian rule. Later, the Neo-Babylonian empire would overthrow Assyria in 612 BC—only to fall itself in 539 BC. Assyria, however, serves as a symbol of all enemies of God’s kingdom, including spiritual ones.

Jesus has already defeated our spiritual enemies once and for all (Colossians 2:13–15). The biggest battle has been won. What remains is the “mop-up operation.” Though the spiritual battle still rages today, we need not fear the enemy because Jesus, our shepherd-king, will strengthen and ultimately deliver us. As we trust in Him, we can be assured that we will one day dwell securely in our promised land—a new heaven and earth (Revelation 21:1).
